Learning self defense – Getting Started In Martial Arts
I always wanted to pursue Martial Arts, but never really had the opportunity. When I moved to Florida, I decided now is the time! I researched some local schools to visit; I found three that seemed legit.
The first visit was a bust, I pulled up to the school, went to open the door and they were closed. One down, two to go…
The next school I visited focused more on kickboxing, which was definitely an area of interest. During my visit there, I was given a tour and asked about what I wanted in a program. I explained that I was interested in learning self defense and wanted to learn how to fight! The guy from the “school” told me he thought that I would be better suited for the cardio kickboxing program and encouraged me to sign up to try the class. “It’s a really good workout” he said. Following up with a comment on how all the women fighting or interested in fighting are butch.
Really dude? So, because I appear feminine to you, I’m too delicate to learn how to fight? I can only handle boot camp-type workouts? So, I wrote this jerk off and left the gym irritated to say the least.
Two down and one to go; next stop Master Mehrdad’s. I walked in the door and was greeted by a charismatic man, Master Mehrdad. As we talked, he gave me an overview of his background and experience and showed me around. After my experience at the last “school” I asked Master Mehrdad if other women are in his school. “Of course” he says with a smile. He goes on to explain he has two daughters that train with him and many other women. OK really, just sign me up now…but I tried to keep a poker face and agreed to come back the next day to try out a class.
Over a year later, I’m still there, still learning, and still LOVE being a part of Master Mehrdad’s school! By: Tiffany Wimmer
